Gordy’s
Trivia
Kristian Hoffman &
Lovely
piano player, fantastic keyboard player, great singer. HOWEVER! His voice I have
to say, doesn’t really appeal to me. This I find slightly off-putting when
listening to this album. Also the record would appear to have an ongoing theme
throughout which I can’t really grasp. Again off-putting. Some great songs
though! ‘Series of you’s’ I’m sure could be a hit for somebody, a real
quality composition. The beautiful ‘Revert to type’ is nice easy listening,
perfect sound for the lounge. I particularly like the opener, the stirring
‘Devil may care’. If you were to ask to hear the CD in the shop before you
purchased you may be tempted to part with you’re hard earned cash on this one
alone. If not (or if you’ve bought it and taken it home) you go on to hear a
lovely string quartet play the opening of track two ‘Get it right this time’
at this point you may be saying ‘now! This is interesting’ and then to put
the icing on it, comes the graceful voice of Anna Waronker. You may well be in
love with the album by now. ‘Anybody but you’ is a rousing number with a
good beat and a great guitar intro and energetic rhythm throughout. The haunting
‘Scarecrow’ will appeal to many. Interesting tempo changes in this one and
once again some nice piano. ‘Madison Avenue’ well…. I tend to keep seeing
Batman and Robin Powing their way through a fight with the joker on this one.
‘Tender even then’ begins with an acoustic guitar intro, which would not be
out of place in a Joni Mitchell song.
Another
one for the ‘lounge’. That’s not the name of one of her songs by the way.
‘I can’t remember my dreams’ would be a lot more interesting if I could make out Kristian’s vocals. This is another problem that I had in various parts of the album.
Kristian
is joined on the album by a host of talented musicians and singers.
Overall,
an album worth listening to, and enough for me to be on the lookout for a
Kristian Hoffman live appearance in my area.
