How long have you worked with Kristian and how did it start?
I've worked with Kristian since the early 90's, when he asked me to play
on a couple of tracks on his 1st record.
Had you heard of Kristian before you worked with him?
I played in a soul barband with Robert Mache who was in the Swinging
Madisons with Kristian. So I knew of Kristian through the Madisons. So when Kristian was putting together his first record, he needed a real drummer on a couple of tunes so Robert gave him my name. Robert is a now a guitar hippy in New Orleans who just had a beautiful baby.
What projects have you worked with him on?
The blair witch project, Earthquake Weather, his first record, oh yeah,
the Bee Gees and Hollies records too! Green Circles hmmm.
What did Kristian do for the Drool Brothers?
We rode Kristian's coat tails to mega superstardom. Actually, I had
Kristian sing on a single we did called "Halloweenish", which is a kooky
halloween song. We love it, Kristian hates it. He was more interested in
my kitchen cabinet hardware than the song.
Do you have a favourite Kristian song?
He Means Well - It Rocks.
Do you have a favourite Kristian album?
Earthquake Weather because I was involved in the project from the beginning
and the songs became close to me from working really hard on them. I received them in blackmail demo form, and worked with Kristian and Ronnie Gomez to help create this wonderfully complex pop masterpeice. Also, besides my brother, Ronnie is one of the greatest pop bassists around. We played in bands together since high school so it was fun working on
that record.
If you had to cover a Kristian song which one would it be?
Science Fiction - It's a gem!
If you had to cover a song together with Kristian which one would it be and why?
"I"ve Got you Babe" by Sonny and Cher because I've always wanted a fur vest like Sonny and Kristian is a Diva in training.
Is Kristian a perfectionist in the studio, working on something until it's perfect or does he finish it in one take?
Kristian knows what he wants and Earl and Kristian as a team really know how to get it. From what little I've seen, he brings in his notes and follows a plan. I crack up in the way he works the guitar players, he's pretty picky in that area. All in all, it's kinda hard for me to tell because after I do my drum tracks I'm out the door faster than a salesman at the Munsters.
How does the studio Kristian compare with the on stage Kristian?
The sudio in general is more of a technical endeavor with machines running,
clocks ticking, egos being checked and guest stars not showing up. Kristian has to manage all that which is more right brained, left
brained??? On the
otherhand, especially the shows Kristian did in the early 90's with just me
and Ronnie (and occasional guest appearances with Lance Loud), Kristian's
genius was presented through our ad-lib retardo semi-punk folk chaos, which
was alot of fun because you never know what was going to happen on stage.
Kristian would put on his guitar, but forget a guitar chord at home. He
would play a lead break on his acoustic guitar in the wrong key, go out of
tune and have Ronnie tune his guitar for him in front of people. Yet, the
integrity of the songs prevailed. The shows were the opposite of the
exemplar L.A. showcase. One of my fondest memories is K rolling around on
the floor with a toilet plunger between his legs while we were doing Paul
Anka's "Having my Baby."
What do you think is Kristian’s greatest musical skill?
Kristian has many musical skills which is exemplified in the complexity of his music. Kristian is wonderfull lyricist, incredible arranger and orchestrator. I've learned alot working with him and he continues to be one of my heroes. Speaking of skill, he is one of my favorite lead guitarists - I swear it.
If you had to present an award to Kristian what would you say or how would you introduce him?
That's a funny question because I'm watching the re-cap of the golden globes on Bravo as I answer these! I think I'll rip off Ronald Reagan's intro to Jane Mansfield.
What famous movie character would describe Kristian the best?
Boris Karloff - because he's kinda creepy in a lovable way.
Describe Kristian the artist in three words.
snap, crackle, POP
